There is something incredibly special about photographing a couple as they move through different seasons of their lives together. As a Dallas–Fort Worth wedding and maternity photographer, I get to document so many beautiful milestones—but the sessions that bring past couples back in front of my camera will always have an extra-special place in my heart.
I photographed this sweet couple’s engagement photos. Then I photographed their wedding day. And now, I had the absolute joy of photographing them again as they prepare to become Mom and Dad.
COME ON. How special is that?!
For their maternity session, we traded wedding clothes and perfectly planned details for something completely relaxed: cut-off jeans, bare skin, soft linen, a cotton T-shirt, lake rocks, windblown hair and one of those gorgeous Texas sunsets.
We photographed their maternity photos at Murrell Park on Lake Grapevine near Flower Mound, one of my favorite locations when I want a session to feel natural, casual and completely connected.
And it fit them perfectly.
Casual Maternity Photos at Lake Grapevine
Maternity photos absolutely do not have to mean a formal gown and perfectly curled hair—unless that is what you love!
This session was proof that sometimes the simplest styling can create photographs that feel incredibly intimate and beautiful.
Mama wore cut-off denim shorts with a bandeau and a lightweight, flowing linen overshirt. Dad kept his look just as easy with jeans and a comfortable cotton T-shirt. Together, their outfits felt summery, relaxed and organic against the rocks and water of Lake Grapevine.
Nothing felt overly styled or too perfect.
Instead, we let them move.
We let the wind catch her linen shirt and blow her hair across her face. We photographed them walking along the rocks, cuddling together, laughing and soaking in this tiny chapter before their family grows.
Those little in-between moments are often where my favorite photographs happen.
I want you to be able to look at your maternity photographs years from now and remember what this season actually felt like—not just what it looked like.
Maternity Photos at Murrell Park in Flower Mound
Murrell Park is one of my favorite locations for maternity photography in the Dallas–Fort Worth area because it gives us such a different look from the traditional grassy Texas field.
Lake Grapevine gives us water, rocky shoreline, open sky and beautiful sunset light. Depending on the evening, we may have soft pastel skies, golden light reflecting across the lake, dramatic clouds or a little Texas wind that gives everything movement.
For this session, the wind became part of the story.
Her hair was blowing. Her linen overshirt was moving. The water was behind them. Nothing felt stiff or overly posed.
It felt like summer.
It felt like them.
That is exactly what I want when I customize a maternity session.
Your Maternity Session Should Look Like YOU
There is no single formula for maternity photography.
Some moms dream about a long, romantic maternity gown in a golden field at sunset. Others want bare feet at the lake. Maybe you picture an editorial maternity session in the city, something intimate in the studio or a cozy lifestyle session at home.
That is why I customize my maternity sessions around each family.
Before your session, we talk about the overall feeling you want your photographs to have. From there, I help select a location that complements that vision and create a custom style guide so you are not left wondering what everyone should wear.
Your wardrobe, colors, textures and location all work together.
If we are creating a soft, organic lakeside maternity session, I may recommend linen, denim, cotton, creamy neutrals and earthy tones. For something more romantic, we may choose one of my maternity gowns and build Dad’s wardrobe around it.
And yes—I help style Dad, too!
You should never have to figure all of this out alone.
What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
The best maternity wardrobe is one that makes you feel beautiful while fitting the location and overall style of your session.
For some sessions, that might be a dramatic flowing gown. For others, it could be jeans and a bandeau, an open button-down, a simple fitted dress or soft layers that move in the wind.
I offer maternity gown options for my clients, and we can also incorporate pieces from your own wardrobe.
When planning your session, I create a personalized style guide with suggestions for Mom and Dad so your outfits coordinate without feeling overly matched.
I especially love texture for maternity sessions—linen, cotton, denim, knits and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully because they add movement and dimension without distracting from the connection between you.
The goal isn't to turn you into someone else for your photographs.
The goal is to create a more polished version of you.
When Should You Book Your Maternity Photos?
One of the most common questions I receive is: When should I book my maternity photographer?
My recommendation is to reach out and reserve your maternity session right after your first trimester.
You do not need to wait until your belly is fully showing to get on my calendar. Booking early gives us time to plan your location, styling and overall vision—and, most importantly, it helps make sure we have availability during the ideal stage of your pregnancy.
I generally recommend scheduling maternity photos for around 32–34 weeks.
At that point, your bump is typically beautifully defined, but we are still photographing early enough that you are more likely to feel comfortable moving, walking and changing positions during your session.
Every pregnancy is different, of course. If there are special circumstances, multiples or recommendations from your doctor that affect timing, we can adjust your session accordingly.
But please don't wait until week 32 to start looking for a photographer!
Reach out after your first trimester, get your date reserved, and then we can start dreaming up something beautiful together.
Maternity and Newborn Photography Packages in DFW
Pregnancy is only the beginning of this story.
That is why I also offer maternity and newborn photography packages for families who want to document both chapters.
Your maternity session celebrates the anticipation—the bump, the excitement, the two of you standing on the edge of an entirely new life.
Then baby arrives, and everything changes.
Tiny fingers. Sleepy stretches. Little feet. The way your baby curls against your chest. The way you and your partner look at this brand-new person and realize your family will never be exactly the same again.
Those are the moments we document during your newborn session.
And you have options for where we photograph them.
Newborn Photos in My Cozy Lake Dallas Studio
For families who want a calm, beautiful space without having to prepare their house for photographs, newborn sessions can take place in my cozy natural-light studio in Lake Dallas.
My studio has an organic, airy, lifestyle feel that keeps the focus on your baby and your connection as a family.
We can create images of baby alone, with Mom, with Dad and together as a family. The goal is not to make your newborn session feel overly complicated or filled with elaborate props.
I want it to feel timeless, comfortable and focused on your newest little love.
In-Home Newborn Photography
If home is where you want to remember those first days, I also offer in-home newborn photography.
There is something incredibly meaningful about photographing your baby in the place where you are actually bringing them home.
Your bedroom. The nursery you spent months preparing. Your couch where you have already spent countless hours cuddling. The tiny everyday spaces that are about to become part of your family's history.
In-home newborn sessions can be beautifully relaxed and personal, especially for parents who love documentary-inspired, lifestyle photography.
Whether we photograph your newborn in my studio or in your home, I will help you prepare so the experience feels as easy as possible.
From Engagement Photos to Wedding Photos to Maternity Photos
This is the part that means so much to me.
When I photographed this couple's engagement session, we were celebrating the beginning of one chapter.
Then came their wedding.
And now I get to watch the two people I photographed promising forever to each other prepare to become parents.
That is one of the greatest gifts of doing this work for so many years.
I don't want to photograph only the perfectly dressed, milestone version of your life.
I want the whole story.
I want the engagement photographs where you cannot stop laughing. The wedding photographs surrounded by everyone you love. The windswept maternity photos on the rocks at Lake Grapevine. And then the photographs where that tiny baby is finally curled up in your arms.
Someday, these photographs all belong to the same story.
Yours.
