Summertime Maternity Sessions — Let’s Keep It Real (and Really Beautiful)

There’s just something about maternity photos in the summer. The sunshine hits different, the breeze plays with your hair, and everything feels soft, warm, and beautifully effortless. Whether you're dipping your toes in the lake or walking barefoot through tall grass, summer sets the perfect scene to celebrate that baby bump in all its glowy glory.

As a maternity photographer based in the DFW area, I’ve seen how this season brings out the best in candid, natural photos. The light is golden, the wardrobe is breezy, and there’s something deeply peaceful about capturing the final weeks of pregnancy in the great outdoors.

The Vibe: Natural, Candid, and Totally You

My approach to maternity photography is all about authenticity. I want you to feel comfortable, beautiful, and completely like yourself. No stiff poses or awkward smiles—just honest moments between you and your growing family.

Think soft laughs, sweet glances, little belly rubs, and letting the wind do its thing with your hair. Candid photos have a way of bringing out real emotion, and summer gives us the perfect canvas to capture it all.

When Should You Schedule Your Summer Maternity Photos?

Timing is everything when it comes to maternity sessions. You want to show off that beautiful bump, but you also want to feel comfortable moving around and enjoying the session. The sweet spot is typically between 28 and 34 weeks.

By this stage in your pregnancy:

  • Your bump is showing clearly and photographically flattering
  • You still have the energy to walk, sit, and pose without discomfort
  • You’re likely feeling excited and connected to the pregnancy journey

And in summer? Golden hour is your best friend. That’s the hour just before sunset when the light is warm, soft, and straight-up magical. Not only does it make your skin glow, but it also helps keep things cooler (which, let’s be honest, matters in Texas).

Where Should You Go? The Best Summer Maternity Photo Locations Around DFW

Location sets the mood of your session, and in the DFW area, we’ve got options—from wild and woodsy to romantic and lakeside. Here are some of my top picks for summertime maternity photos:

Murrell Park (Flower Mound)

If you're looking for a natural setting with lake views, tall grass, and glowing sunsets, Murrell Park is a dream. There’s a peaceful feel to it, and the lake backdrop gives every shot a soft, ethereal touch.

Lake Ray Roberts (Pilot Point)

Want something a little more secluded and sandy? This lakeside gem has quiet coves and a ton of natural beauty. It’s perfect for barefoot, toes-in-the-water, dreamy maternity vibes.

TWU Gardens & Greenhouse (Denton)

This one’s a fave for vintage-loving mamas. The TWU campus has old stone steps, wild gardens, and a sweet little greenhouse that photographs so beautifully at golden hour.

Adriatica Village (McKinney)

For something a bit more European-inspired, Adriatica offers cobblestone streets, charming architecture, and romantic nooks. It’s a great alternative if you're not into the rustic vibe.

Your Backyard or a Local Wildflower Field

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple location! Sometimes the best stories are told in familiar spaces, where you're comfortable and calm. I love turning everyday spots into something special.

What to Wear: Summer Maternity Style Guide

This is one of the top questions I get—and here’s the truth: comfort + confidence = magic on camera. And summer is the perfect time to embrace that undone, airy, effortless look.

Here are a few wardrobe tips to help you plan the perfect look:

Go Breezy

Light fabrics like cotton, linen, or soft knits not only feel cooler, they move beautifully in the wind and look dreamy on camera. Flowing maxi dresses, oversized button-downs, and relaxed skirts all work well.

Keep It Neutral

Whites, creams, soft tans, sage, dusty rose, and other muted tones photograph beautifully in the summer light. These shades also pair well with the natural backgrounds we’ll be shooting in.

Don’t Be Afraid of Denim

A pair of cute, cutoff maternity shorts and a simple white bralette or crop tank is such a classic summer look. It’s casual, it’s fresh, and it’s super flattering when styled right. Add a loose button-up or kimono for a layered look.

Barefoot, Baby

Unless we’re on city streets, I often suggest going barefoot for at least part of the session. It adds a natural, relaxed vibe that fits the mood of summer perfectly.

Show the Bump

If you're feeling confident, crop tops, bralettes, or open dresses that show off your bump are so beautiful on camera. It’s all about what makes you feel good—whether that’s fully covered or a little more skin.

A Few Quick Tips for Your Summer Maternity Session

  • Hydrate beforehand: Texas heat is real! Make sure to drink water before your session (and bring some with you).
  • Bring bug spray: Especially if we’re heading to a field or lake, it's always good to have on hand.
  • Keep makeup natural: Dewy, glowing skin looks amazing in the summer light. Skip heavy foundations—let your natural radiance shine.
  • Come ready to move: We’ll be walking, sitting in the grass, maybe even wading into the lake. The more relaxed you are, the more candid and natural the photos will feel.

Why Summer Maternity Photos Are So Special

There’s something symbolic about summer—growth, light, warmth, new beginnings. It mirrors the season of life you’re in, and it brings a beautiful energy to your photos.

When you look back on these images years from now, I want you to remember how the sun felt on your shoulders, how your baby moved inside you, how loved you felt. These aren’t just photos—they’re time capsules.
