A Long Engagement, A Beautiful Love Story, and The Sweetest Sunset Session

Some engagement sessions just feel extra special, and Hunter + Gavin’s session at Murrell Park in Flower Mound was one of those evenings I will remember for a very long time. These two have been engaged for a while now, and their wedding this fall at Stonecrest Venue is something we have all been looking forward to for what feels like forever. After a long engagement, there is something really meaningful about finally getting close to the wedding day. You can feel the excitement, the comfort they have with each other, and the quiet confidence that they are exactly where they are supposed to be.

We planned their engagement session for sunset at Murrell Park, which is one of my favorite locations in the Flower Mound area because it has wide open scenic fields, tall green grass, and in the spring and early summer, the most beautiful tiny white flowers scattered everywhere. When the sun starts to drop behind the trees, the entire field glows, and everything turns soft and golden. It is one of those places that feels peaceful and romantic without trying too hard.

Hunter chose the most beautiful long flowing rust colored dress that moved perfectly in the wind and looked incredible against the green field and sunset light. Rust tones photograph so beautifully, especially at sunset, because they pick up the warm tones of the sun and make everything feel rich and romantic. Gavin wore a neutral linen suit with a white tucked in shirt and brown shoes, and the combination of their outfits together looked timeless, soft, and perfectly coordinated without being too matchy. Their outfits were a perfect example of how engagement session styling should look — elevated, comfortable, and timeless.

Why Murrell Park is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Murrell Park in Flower Mound is one of my go-to engagement session locations for couples who want nature, open space, and sunset light. The park sits along Lake Grapevine, and it has trails, open fields, trees, and beautiful sunset views across the water and grasslands. One of my favorite spots is the wide open field where the grass grows tall and wild, and when the tiny white flowers bloom, it looks like something out of a movie.

The reason I love wide open fields for engagement sessions is because it allows couples to move naturally. Instead of feeling posed or stiff, they can walk, spin, run, laugh, and interact with each other. Movement always creates more natural photos, and it helps couples relax and just enjoy being together. Hunter and Gavin were so easy to photograph because they were constantly laughing and talking to each other, and it felt more like they were on a date than at a photoshoot.

If you are planning engagement photos, I always recommend choosing a location where you can move around and where the light at sunset is unobstructed. Open fields, lakes, and parks are perfect for this because the light wraps around couples in a really soft and flattering way.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos in a Field

Hunter and Gavin did such a great job with their outfits that I want to share a few tips for couples planning engagement sessions, especially in open fields or nature locations.

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they create movement. When there is even a small breeze, the dress moves and adds a romantic, cinematic look to photos. Longer dresses also tend to look more elegant and timeless in wide open landscapes.

Neutral colors always photograph well because they don’t distract from the couple. Creams, rust, sage green, soft blue, tan, and soft neutrals are all great choices. Gavin’s neutral linen suit was perfect because it looked elevated but still relaxed enough for an outdoor setting.

I always recommend avoiding bright neon colors, busy patterns, or large logos because those things tend to pull attention away from faces and emotion. Engagement photos should feel timeless so that when couples look at them years from now, they still love how they look.

The Champagne Pop and How to Do It

One of the most fun parts of Hunter and Gavin’s engagement session was the champagne pop. Champagne pops are always a great idea for engagement sessions because they add movement, excitement, and a celebratory feel to photos. They also help couples relax because once you shake a champagne bottle and start laughing, everything feels fun and natural.

If you want to do a champagne pop for your engagement session, here are a few tips to make it work perfectly.

First, buy real champagne or sparkling wine with a cork, not a twist-off bottle. The cork is what creates the big pop and spray. Prosecco or sparkling rosé work really well for this and are usually affordable.

Second, make sure the bottle is shaken well before opening. You want pressure inside the bottle so that when the cork comes out, the champagne sprays forward instead of just bubbling over the top.

Third, point the bottle away from your face and slightly upward. This makes the champagne spray out in a long stream, which looks amazing in photos.

Fourth, laugh and don’t worry about getting a little messy. The best champagne pop photos always involve laughing, running away from the spray, and just enjoying the moment.

I always tell couples to bring two bottles if possible because the first one is practice and the second one is where we usually get the perfect shot.

Champagne pops are especially great near sunset because the spray catches the sunlight and glows, which makes the photos look magical.

Engagement Sessions Should Feel Like a Date

One of the things I always tell my couples is that engagement sessions should feel like a date, not a photoshoot. You should walk together, talk, laugh, spin, hug, and just spend time together. The best photos always happen in between poses when couples are just being themselves.

Hunter and Gavin were so natural together. They walked through the field holding hands, spun each other around in the tall grass, laughed during the champagne pop, and watched the sunset together. Those quiet moments when the sun was almost gone and the sky turned soft and golden were some of my favorite photos from the entire session.

When couples trust the process and just focus on each other, that is when the magic happens.

Why Engagement Sessions Matter

Engagement sessions are so important because they allow couples to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day. By the time the wedding arrives, couples already know how I work, how I guide them, and how natural everything feels. It makes the wedding day portraits so much easier and more relaxed.

Engagement sessions are also a really special season of life. This is the time between saying yes and saying I do, and it goes by so fast. I always tell couples to enjoy being engaged because it is such a unique and exciting time in life.

For Hunter and Gavin, this engagement session felt like a celebration of how long they have been waiting for this wedding and how close they are now to finally becoming husband and wife. Their fall wedding at Stonecrest Venue is going to be absolutely beautiful, and I already know it is going to be such a joyful day.

EntLooking Ahead to Their Fall Wedding at Stonecrest Venue

Stonecrest Venue is going to be the perfect place for Hunter and Gavin to get married this fall. Fall weddings have such a romantic atmosphere with cooler air, warm colors, and golden sunset light. If their engagement session is any indication of what their wedding day will feel like, it is going to be full of laughter, happy tears, and so many beautiful moments.

I always feel so honored when couples trust me to photograph both their engagement session and their wedding day because I get to see their story from this season of engagement all the way through their wedding day and beyond.

Hunter and Gavin are truly the sweetest couple, and I am so excited to photograph their wedding this fall. Their engagement session at Murrell Park was full of sunset light, tiny white flowers, champagne spray, laughter, and so much love, and it was the perfect way to celebrate this season of their lives.

I cannot wait to see them again on their wedding day at Stonecrest Venue and capture the next chapter of their story.
